about

Another FAWM song (I owe a goodly chunk of this album to the February Album Writing Month challenge, over the last few years). The phrase "unlearning stone" popped into my head, and I thought about my childhood, in a school district where weakness was unforgivable. I learned my lessons well. . .and had to work to unlearn them in college, where my choir director pointed out that music reaches its greatest peak of artistry when the musicians can be vulnerable with one another. Turns out vulnerability isn't weakness after all. Today I have more friends than I ever have, people who have seen me at my most broken and stressed and loved me anyway.

lyrics

Unlearning Stone

The day the lights went out at school
Kids were everywhere but I felt alone
There were screams and yells, but I stayed cool
I was silent, like a stone

When the bullies came with their swagger and strut
Tried my best to make them leave me alone
I gave as good as I got with every fight
I got tough, like a stone

When they used their words instead of fists
To make me feel small and alone
I learned to keep my face expressionless
I was blank, like a stone

So please forgive me if you can’t read my face
It’s just I’ve spent so long alone
I love you, but I will need time and grace
I am trying. . .to unlearn stone.
